This stunning and exceptionally rare Paul Newman Daytona Ref. 6239 is one of the most sought after configurations by Rolex collectors. These yellow gold, black dial examples are referred to as John Player Special or JPS Daytonas. In the early 1970s, cigarette maker John Player sponsored the Lotus Formula One race team. The Lotus team car donned the black and gold logo of the John Player Special cigarette. The similarity of coloring between the formula one car and the Rolex chronograph that had become popular in the auto-racing world did not go unnoticed. This earned this Daytona the nickname John Player Special.
